In the HBO adaptation of The Last of Us Part 2, the character Abby, portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever, will not be as muscular as in the video game. Showrunner Neil Druckmann, who is also the head of Naughty Dog, explained to Entertainment Weekly that this change stems from the different narrative priorities of the TV series compared to the game. Druckmann noted that in the game, Abby's physicality was crucial to differentiate her gameplay mechanics from Ellie's, making her feel more like Joel with her brute strength. However, in the series, the focus shifts more toward drama, reducing the necessity for Abby to be as physically imposing.
Druckmann praised Dever, stating, "We would've struggled to find someone as good as Kaitlyn to play this role." He emphasized that while there will still be action in the series, the storytelling approach prioritizes different elements.
Co-showrunner Craig Mazin added that this adaptation presents an opportunity to explore a version of Abby who may be physically more vulnerable but possesses a stronger spirit. He hinted at exploring the origins and manifestations of her formidable nature, suggesting a deeper character development over time. This comment aligns with HBO's plans to extend The Last of Us Part 2 story beyond a single season, with Season 2 set to conclude after seven episodes at a "natural breakpoint."
The character of Abby has been a focal point of controversy, leading to significant harassment and threats directed at Naughty Dog employees, including Druckmann and actress Laura Bailey. The intensity of this backlash prompted HBO to provide extra security for Dever during filming. Isabel Merced, who plays Dina in Season 2, remarked on the absurdity of the situation, reminding fans that Abby is a fictional character.
