Alix Wilton Regan, the voice behind Dragon Age's Female Inquisitor, has responded to the controversy surrounding last year's Dragon Age: The Veilguard, attributing the polarized reception to those who "hoped for the game's — or BioWare's — failure."
The acclaimed performer, who reprised her role from Dragon Age: Inquisition in the latest installment, told IGN she was "heartbroken" by the game's commercial struggles despite generally favorable critical reviews.
In a wide-ranging interview about her prolific video game career — including her upcoming role in Microsoft's Perfect Dark reboot — Wilton Regan expressed deep affection for her time as the Inquisitor, though she believes the character's story has concluded.
"I was devastated for BioWare when I saw the divisive response," Wilton Regan commented about The Veilguard's reception. "Personally, I found it to be an excellent showcase of BioWare's signature storytelling. However, there was clearly an element of the gaming community rooting against its success."
The game became a target of culture war debates at launch, drawing criticism for including a non-binary companion character and gender identity options. Steam user reviews currently show "Mixed" reception with prominent "LGBTQ+" and "political" tags.
"The pre-release attacks were particularly frustrating," Wilton Regan observed. "How can anyone fairly judge creative work before experiencing it? This premature negativity reflects poorly on our discourse."

EA confirmed in January that The Veilguard fell roughly 50% short of sales projections, coinciding with director Corrine Busche's departure and subsequent layoffs within BioWare's development team.
The studio has since indicated that The Veilguard has received its final update, with no additional planned content.
"My deepest hope is for BioWare's continued success," Wilton Regan said in closing. "Their creativity has given us so many incredible worlds, and I'm confident their future projects will demonstrate that same magic."
A restructured BioWare team is currently developing Mass Effect 5, though no release window has been announced.
