Nintendo has thrilled fans with the announcement of two iconic Game Boy Advance (GBA) racing games from the beloved F-Zero series joining the Switch Online + Expansion Pack service.
F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend Arrive on Switch Online
Available October 11, 2024
Starting October 11, subscribers can dive into the high-octane action of F-Zero: GP Legend and the previously Japan-exclusive F-Zero Climax, as announced by Nintendo. These classic GBA titles bring the thrill of futuristic racing to the modern Switch platform.
The F-Zero series, a cornerstone of Nintendo's gaming legacy, first debuted in Japan in 1990. Renowned for its cutting-edge technology and blistering speed, F-Zero has not only been a critical success but has also influenced other racing franchises, such as SEGA's "Daytona USA." The series has been celebrated for pushing the technological boundaries of gaming consoles, particularly on platforms like the SNES, where it set standards for speed in racing games.
Much like Nintendo's iconic Mario Kart series, F-Zero gameplay revolves around navigating treacherous tracks and engaging in high-speed combat with other racers in their "F-Zero machines." The series' protagonist, Captain Falcon, is also a notable fighter in the Super Smash Bros. series.
F-Zero: GP Legend initially launched in Japan in 2003, with a Western release following in 2004. F-Zero Climax, released exclusively in Japan in 2004, marks the last major entry in the series until the release of F-Zero 99 on the Switch last year. In an interview, F-Zero game designer Takaya Imamura cited the dominance of Mario Kart as a reason for the series' near two-decade hiatus. With the October 2024 update to the Switch Online + Expansion Pack, subscribers can now experience F-Zero Climax and F-Zero: GP Legend, competing in various race modes including Grand Prix, story modes, and time-based challenges.
