The upcoming Monopoly movie from Lionsgate has taken an exciting turn by securing John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein as its writers. Known for their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein bring a fresh perspective to the iconic Hasbro board game adaptation. The film will be produced by Margot Robbie under her production company, LuckyChap, adding another layer of anticipation to this project.
In addition to their work on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Daley and Goldstein have also recently penned and directed their original film, Mayday. Their writing credits extend to high-profile films such as The Flash and Spider-Man: Homecoming, showcasing their versatility and knack for storytelling across different genres.
The idea of a Monopoly movie has been floating around for quite some time, with discussions dating back to 2007 when Ridley Scott showed interest in directing it. In 2011, Scott enlisted writers Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski to craft the script, but that iteration didn't come to fruition. Subsequent attempts in 2015 saw Lionsgate and Hasbro collaborating on a version written by Andrew Niccol, and later in 2019, there were reports of Kevin Hart and director Tim Story being involved. However, none of these efforts materialized.
With Lionsgate's acquisition of eOne from Hasbro, the Monopoly film project has been revitalized. Fans and newcomers alike are hopeful that this new version, helmed by Daley and Goldstein, will finally "pass Go" and bring the beloved game to life on the big screen in a memorable way.
