Following its release in late 2023, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has been making waves with its sales success, recently surpassing 200,000 units sold. Despite facing some technical hiccups and accusations of censorship upon its launch, the game has clearly struck a chord with fans eager to dive back into this classic action title.
Developed originally by Grasshopper Manufacture, famous for their distinctive action games such as the No More Heroes series, Lollipop Chainsaw is a vibrant hack-and-slash game where players control Juliet Starling, a cheerleader armed with a chainsaw to combat zombies. While the original developers did not return for the remaster, Dragami Games took the reins, enhancing the game with quality-of-life improvements and a significant visual upgrade.
Several months post-launch in September 2024, Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP has achieved sales of over 200,000 copies across various platforms, including current and last-gen consoles as well as PC. This milestone was announced by Dragami Games via a tweet, celebrating the game's impressive sales figures.
Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP Developers Celebrate The Game's Sales Success
The narrative of Lollipop Chainsaw follows Juliet Starling, a San Romero High School cheerleader who uncovers her family's legacy as zombie hunters when her school is overrun by the undead. Players engage in intense combat with zombie hordes and unique bosses, wielding Juliet's iconic chainsaw in a style reminiscent of games like Bayonetta.
The original release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012 saw even greater success, reportedly selling over a million copies. This success can be attributed in part to the collaboration between renowned game designer Goichi Suda and filmmaker James Gunn, known for his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, who contributed to the game's story and dialogue.
As of now, it remains uncertain whether the sales success of Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP will lead to additional content or a sequel. However, this achievement is a promising sign for remasters of niche titles. In a similar vein, another Grasshopper Manufacture game, Shadows of the Damned: Hella Remastered, has also been updated and released across all current platforms, bringing this action-horror classic to new audiences on modern hardware.
