As mobile gaming continues to evolve, it's no surprise that sports simulators, a staple of AAA gaming, are increasingly making their way to mobile platforms. What may catch your attention, however, is the collaboration between Tencent and the NBA (National Basketball Association) to bring the NBA 2K series to mobile devices in China. Slated for release on March 25th, this mobile adaptation, known as NBA 2K All Star, promises to deliver a live-service version of the popular franchise to fans in the East.
The partnership between Tencent and the NBA isn't entirely unexpected, given their significant influence in the gaming and sports industries, respectively. Yet, it's noteworthy that basketball enjoys a massive following in China, drawing in a vast audience and legions of fans each year. This context makes the arrival of NBA 2K All Star on mobile less of a shock and more of a strategic move to tap into an enthusiastic market.
What remains to be seen is the content included in this mobile version, which notably omits the traditional year-based branding (like 2K24, 2K25). Will it feature a long-term live service model? We'll have to wait until the March 25th release date in China to find out.
Until we have concrete details on NBA 2K All Star, much of what can be said is speculative. Yet, this speculation is insightful, especially given the NBA's growing footprint in mobile gaming. The recent launch of Dunk City Dynasty, another collaboration with the NBA, underscores this trend. While there have been setbacks, such as the gradual decline of NBA All World following its highly anticipated debut, the overall trajectory suggests that mobile is becoming a crucial platform for the NBA to engage and expand its fanbase.
