Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti vs. AMD RX 9070 XT: Performance Showdown

Author : Christopher Apr 19,2025

For those who dream of immersive 4K gaming but find the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5090's hefty $1,999+ price tag out of reach, fear not. You can still achieve a stellar 4K gaming experience with more budget-friendly options like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT. These graphics cards are currently facing elevated prices due to high demand and limited supply post-launch, but they remain the go-to choices for a high-end gaming setup.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Specs

Comparing the specs of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti and the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT can be tricky due to their different architectures. While Nvidia's CUDA cores and AMD's Shading Units serve similar functions, they aren't directly comparable in numbers.

The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT boasts 64 RDNA 4 compute units, each equipped with 64 shader units, totaling 4,096. Each compute unit also features two AI Accelerators and one RT Accelerator, resulting in 128 and 64 respectively. Paired with 16GB of GDDR6 memory on a 256-bit bus, it's well-equipped for modern gaming, though it might be stretched at 4K in the future.

On the other hand, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti also offers 16GB of memory but uses the newer GDDR7 for theoretically faster performance. It's on a 256-bit bus with higher bandwidth due to increased memory speeds. The RTX 5070 Ti is built with 70 Streaming Multiprocessors, featuring 8,960 CUDA Cores, showcasing Nvidia's ability to double the Shader Units per Compute Unit since the RTX 3080. However, this doesn't translate to double the performance.

Winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Performance

Although the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti appears superior on paper, real-world performance shows both cards excel at 4K gaming and are among the best for 1440p gaming. My review of the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT showed it closely competing with the RTX 5070 Ti, even in ray tracing-intensive games like Cyberpunk 2077.

In certain games, such as Total War: Warhammer 3, the RTX 5070 Ti edges out with 87fps at 4K, while the RX 9070 XT achieves 76fps. Yet, the AMD card averaged 2% faster across various tests, which is significant given its 21% lower theoretical cost.

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Software and Features

Choosing a graphics card today involves more than just hardware specs; software features play a crucial role. The Nvidia RTX 5070 Ti benefits from Nvidia's DLSS suite, which includes AI upscaling and Frame Generation. With the RTX 5000 series, Nvidia introduces multi-frame generation, creating three AI-generated frames for each rendered frame, boosting frame rates while introducing minimal latency, mitigated by Nvidia Reflex.

AMD's Radeon RX 9070 XT supports Frame Generation but only creates one interpolated frame per rendered frame. The significant advancement for AMD is FSR 4, introducing AI upscaling to its graphics cards for the first time. This AI-based method offers more accurate upscaling than the previous temporal method, though it's not as fast as FSR 4. It's worth noting that this is AMD's first foray into AI upscaling, whereas Nvidia has refined DLSS over seven years.

Winner: Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti

RTX 5070 Ti vs. RX 9070 XT: Price

Current GPU pricing is a contentious issue, with new generation cards selling out and prices soaring above suggested retail. The AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT, launched at $599, offers exceptional 4K performance when paired with FSR 4 AI upscaling. This pricing harks back to when flagship GPUs launched at more reasonable prices.

In contrast, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti, with a base price of $749, is $150 more expensive despite similar performance to the RX 9070 XT. Nvidia's card includes additional features like Multi-Frame Generation, but whether these justify the price hike depends on individual gaming needs and preferences.

Winner: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

The Winner Is… the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT

Both the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT and Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti are excellent choices for high-end 1440p and 4K gaming. However, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT stands out as the clear winner due to its significantly lower price point. As prices hopefully normalize, the value offered by the RX 9070 XT becomes even more compelling. For those building a gaming PC focused on high-end gaming without breaking the bank, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT is the top recommendation.
