In 2020, a heartfelt connection was forged between a Batman: Arkham Knight fan suffering from schizophrenia and Kevin Conroy, the iconic voice behind Batman. The fan, deeply touched by the game's narrative of overcoming fear, paranoia, and hallucinations, reached out to Conroy via the Cameo service. He shared his personal battle with the disease and how Batman's story had given him the strength to persevere.
Anticipating a standard 30-second video, the fan was instead gifted with over six minutes of genuine encouragement from Conroy. Moved by the fan's story, Conroy went beyond a formal response, creating a deeply personal message. This video became a lifeline for the fan during some of his darkest moments.
The fan initially kept the video private, but upon learning that Conroy had a brother who also suffered from schizophrenia, he decided to share it on Reddit. His hope was that it might offer solace and inspiration to others facing similar struggles.
"This video has saved me from suicide countless times. Hearing Batman say he believed in me was incredibly powerful... But as time went on, it became just as important that it was Kevin himself who believed in me," the fan shared.
He also expressed his willingness to remove the video if requested by Conroy's family, emphasizing the video's significance in his life and its potential to help others. "If someone in his family asks me to delete this video, I will of course do so. But it has inspired me in my toughest moments, and maybe it will inspire someone else. Hang in there. Because Batman believes in you."
Tragically, Kevin Conroy passed away on November 10, 2022, at the age of 66. Yet, his legacy and the profound impact of his words continue to resonate with millions worldwide.
