SEGA-Inspired ‘Sonic’ Game Surprises with Nostalgic Appeal

Sonic Galactic: A Sonic Mania-esque Fan Game

Sonic Galactic, developed by Starteam, is a Sonic the Hedgehog fan game channeling the spirit of Sonic Mania. The active Sonic fan community consistently produces sequels and spin-offs, and Sonic Mania, a 25th-anniversary celebration, remains a beloved entry. While a true sequel never materialized due to Sonic Team's shift away from pixel art and the developers' other pursuits, Sonic Galactic fills the void.

This fan game, in development for at least four years (first showcased at the 2020 Sonic Amateur Games Expo), imagines a 32-bit Sonic title, akin to a hypothetical Sega Saturn release. It aims for authentic retro 2D platforming reminiscent of the Genesis games, while adding unique elements.

What Makes Sonic Galactic Unique?

The second demo (early 2025) features the classic trio—Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles—in new zones. Joining them are Fang the Sniper (from Sonic Triple Trouble) and a new character, Tunnel the Mole (inspired by Sonic Frontiers’ Illusion Island). Each character boasts unique level paths, mirroring Sonic Mania's design. Special stages, reminiscent of Mania, challenge players to collect rings within a time limit in a 3D environment.

Gameplay in the second demo offers approximately one hour to complete all of Sonic's levels, with shorter playthroughs for the other characters. Expect a total playtime of around two hours. The game's pixel art style and classic Sonic gameplay will resonate with fans of the original games and Sonic Mania.
