Fans eagerly awaiting Shawn Levy's upcoming Star Wars movie can breathe a sigh of relief. The acclaimed director of Deadpool & Wolverine is indeed still on board, and we have a reassuring update from the project’s writer, Jonathan Tropper. "I am excited too," Tropper shared with Screen Rant, expressing his enthusiasm for the future film. "I hope it's on the way sooner than you think."
Currently shrouded in mystery, one of the few details we know is that the film is set after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has previously clarified the film's timeline, stating in a February interview with Deadline, "That’s also in the future. It’s all post-[the first] nine. Shawn’s is a standalone Star Wars story that'll take place post-nine, maybe five or six years out." This positions Levy's project as the first to delve into the post-Rise of Skywalker era.
In the same conversation, Kennedy confirmed that Levy's movie will follow the release of 2026’s The Mandalorian and Grogu. "I'm producing the Mandalorian movie right now, and I'm also producing Shawn Levy's movie, which is after that," she explained. Additionally, there's buzz that Ryan Gosling is set to star in the film.
Tropper’s optimistic words suggest that progress is being made on Levy’s film, despite its anticipated release not being until at least the last quarter of 2026, or possibly even 2027. This means fans will have to exercise patience.
It's worth noting that Disney hasn't released a Star Wars film since the polarizing Star Wars: Episode 9 - The Rise of Skywalker in 2019. In the interim, several projects have been cancelled, including a film from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and a trilogy from Game of Thrones showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff. Additionally, a Star Wars movie slated for a late 2026 release was recently removed from Disney's calendar.

At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, Lucasfilm announced three new Star Wars feature films: a Dave Filoni-directed New Republic film set in his Mando-verse, a Dawn of the Jedi movie led by James Mangold, and a New Jedi Order feature directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, which will see Daisy Ridley reprise her role as Rey post-Rise of Skywalker.
The Obaid-Chinoy project has faced several changes, with screenwriter Steven Knight recently departing after taking over from Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Nonetheless, Rey remains a focal point for Disney's future Star Wars projects, with recent reports from THR indicating her appearance in multiple upcoming films.
Disney's Star Wars lineup extends further, with X-Men producer Simon Kinberg set to write a new trilogy that isn't a continuation of the Skywalker Saga, contrary to initial reports.
The next Star Wars content to hit screens will be Season 2 of Andor, premiering on Disney+ on April 22 with a triple-episode launch, promising an exciting continuation of the beloved series.
