Sony has announced a significant shift in its PlayStation Plus strategy, focusing exclusively on PlayStation 5 games starting January 2026. This change will affect the monthly games offered through PlayStation Plus Essentials and the Game Catalog, as detailed in a recent PlayStation Blog post alongside February 2025's monthly game titles.
"Moving forward, as we prioritize the PS5, PS4 games will no longer be a central feature of our PlayStation Plus Monthly Games and Game Catalog," Sony stated. This transition won't impact games subscribers have already claimed, but titles within the Games Catalog will remain playable until they are rotated out during the monthly updates.
Sony is committed to enhancing the PlayStation Plus experience, promising to refine the service's offerings. This includes exclusive discounts, online multiplayer access, and online game save storage. "We are excited to bring you new PS5 titles each month as we continue to focus on the PS5," Sony emphasized.

The PS4, launched in 2013 and succeeded by the PS5 in 2020, has seen a significant portion of its player base transition to the newer console. "A majority of our community is now engaging with PS5 titles," Sony noted, reflecting the shift in player preferences.
It remains to be seen whether Sony will relegate PS4 games to the Classics Catalog, which currently features titles from the original PlayStation, PS2, and PS3. More details on this are expected to be shared as the implementation date approaches.
