Tencent Branded a Chinese Military Company by US Government

Pentagon List Includes Tencent, Causing Stock Dip; Company Responds

Tencent, a major Chinese technology company, has been added to the U.S. Department of Defense's list of companies with ties to the Chinese military. This designation stems from a 2020 executive order prohibiting U.S. investment in Chinese military entities. The inclusion on the list immediately impacted Tencent's stock price.

The DOD's list, which initially contained 31 companies and has since expanded, identifies businesses believed to contribute to the People's Liberation Army's modernization efforts through technology, expertise, or research. The executive order's implementation previously led to the delisting of three companies from the New York Stock Exchange.

Tencent, in a statement to Bloomberg, refuted its classification as a military company or supplier. While asserting the listing doesn't directly affect its operations, the company pledged to cooperate with the DOD to clarify any misunderstandings. This proactive approach mirrors past instances where companies successfully appealed their inclusion.

The announcement resulted in a 6% drop in Tencent's share price on January 6th, with subsequent downward trends observed. Analysts link this decline directly to the DOD listing. Given Tencent's global prominence—it's the world's largest video game company by investment and a global industry leader—this designation and potential U.S. investment restrictions carry significant financial implications.

Tencent's vast gaming portfolio, managed through Tencent Games, includes ownership stakes in or partnerships with numerous prominent studios, such as Epic Games, Riot Games, Techland (Dying Light), Don't Nod Entertainment (Life is Strange), Remedy Entertainment, FromSoftware, and Discord. The company's market capitalization dwarfs that of its nearest competitor, Sony, by a factor of four.
