The PS Portal is Sony's innovative handheld gaming accessory designed for the PS5 console. It resembles an extended split-pad DualSense controller, featuring an 8-inch 1080p LCD screen in the center. It transforms your PS5 into a portable gaming device by streaming games from your console at up to 60fps. The controller retains the same features as the DualSense, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and a touchscreen interface that replaces the DualSense's touchpad. While the Portal can stream games even when you're away from home, it requires a very stable and fast internet connection. Remember, the PS Portal is not a standalone device; it's strictly a remote player for the PlayStation 5, requiring a PS5 to operate.
Update: You no longer need a PS5 to play games on the PS Portal. Sony has introduced a new feature allowing Portal owners to stream games directly from its PlayStation Now cloud streaming service, eliminating the need for a PS5. This option provides access to over 120 games, including titles like Ghost of Tsushima, Resident Evil 3 Remake, The Last of Us Part 1 Remastered, and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. To enjoy this feature, you must subscribe to the highest tier of PlayStation Plus, which costs $18 per month—a much more affordable alternative to purchasing a PS5 and additional games.
While the PlayStation Portal offers a unique way to stream PS5 games over Wi-Fi within your home, you can also achieve similar functionality by using the PS Remote Play app on other devices, including gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck. However, setting it up can be more complicated, and you'll miss out on some of the DualSense's unique features.
PlayStation Portal Review by Seth Macy**
"The PlayStation Portal surprised me in the best way possible. Initially skeptical, I found it to be a far superior experience compared to using a phone with an attached controller. It works seamlessly and offers the freedom to play my PS5 games from anywhere with decent Wi-Fi coverage, which is especially handy when my family is using the TV for other games. Despite needing a PS5 to function, the Portal's potential is slightly hindered by its inability to connect to Wi-Fi networks that require a web browser login and its lack of Bluetooth audio support. Still, it remains the best current solution for PlayStation Remote Play, and aside from these minor issues, it's a must-have for any PS5 owner who enjoys handheld gaming or needs to share the household TV."
