"Conan O'Brien Exposes Bizarre Oscar Statue Rules for Promos"

Author : Victoria Apr 06,2025

In a surprising twist of events, former Oscars host Conan O'Brien shared an intriguing story on his podcast, "Conan Needs a Friend," about his thwarted promotional ideas for the Academy Awards. O'Brien and his team had envisioned a series of ads featuring him in a playful domestic partnership with a towering 9-foot Oscar statue. However, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences firmly rejected their creative pitches, particularly those involving the statue's positioning and attire.

O'Brien recounted one of his ideas where he and the Oscar statue would engage in typical couple disputes. "We’re fighting about things couples fight about," he said. One concept involved the Oscar lounging on a large couch while O'Brien vacuumed, humorously asking the statue to lift its feet or help with chores. Despite the light-hearted nature of these ideas, the Academy was adamant about not allowing the Oscar to be depicted horizontally.

The comedian was taken aback by the Academy's strict rules regarding the Oscar statue. "One of the people from the Academy came forward and said, ‘Oscar can never be horizontal.’ And that blew my mind," O'Brien remarked, likening the statue to a sacred relic. Additionally, the Academy insisted that the Oscar remain "always naked," dashing O'Brien's humorous vision of the statue wearing an apron and serving leftovers.

While the Academy's decisions may seem perplexing, they are within their rights to enforce such rules. It's unfortunate that we missed out on seeing O'Brien's comedic talents fully showcased in these ads. Fans are hopeful that he'll return with equally clever ideas for future ceremonies, and many are already rooting for him to host the Oscars again in 2026.
