WoW 11.1 Adds New Playable Races

World of Warcraft Patch 11.1 will introduce two new race types: high-speed Breakneck D.R.I.V.E. races and aerial Skyrocket races featuring Goblin jetpacks. These replace traditional Skyriding competitions in the upcoming Undermine zone, the first major content update for The War Within expansion.

Undermine Zone Features Ground-Based Racing

The subterranean Goblin capital of Undermine will prohibit conventional flying, instead offering the D.R.I.V.E. system - customizable vehicle mounts designed for rapid ground travel through the city's winding tunnels. Breakneck races will push these mechanical transports to their limits.

Jetpack Racing Takes Flight

Skyrocket races introduce a hybrid movement system using Goblin jetpacks that blends elements of both traditional and dynamic flying. Racers maintain constant forward momentum while having limited turning control at higher speeds, creating an unusual challenge where collected boost rings increase velocity at the cost of maneuverability.

Early testing footage reveals these airborne competitions require precise timing and route planning, with courses that demand mastery of the unconventional movement mechanics. The current PTR version shows four standard and four reverse courses for both race types, though they lack the advanced difficulty variants found in some Skyriding challenges.

Community Reaction

Player responses to the jetpack racing mechanics vary, with some praising the innovative concept while others find the movement overly restrictive compared to Skyriding's fluidity. As the PTR testing phase continues, developers may refine these systems before the estimated February 2025 launch of Patch 11.1: Undermined.

Both race categories will feature standard achievement tiers (Bronze, Silver, Gold) for completion times, offering dedicated racers fresh challenges in the underground metropolis. These new systems demonstrate Blizzard's commitment to expanding World of Warcraft's racing gameplay with unique mechanics tailored to each expansion's themes.
