FromSoftware has recently unveiled more details about their upcoming exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, titled The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a character that breaks from FromSoft's traditional aesthetic.
The trailer showcased during the Switch 2 Direct featured a unique character—a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs. This intriguing figure serves as the new hub companion, reminiscent of the iconic fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in an interview with Nintendo, explained, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance."
Miyazaki highlighted the influence of Nintendo on the game's design, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." He further elaborated on the character's design, saying, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have always been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds, with characters like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll becoming familiar touchstones in players' journeys. In The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the role of the winged rat as a guide remains to be fully explored. Miyazaki teased that FromSoft is experimenting with "a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting players should anticipate surprises when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
