Elder Scrolls Online Introduces Subclasses After 11 Years of Fan Demand

Author : Christopher May 30,2025

The Elder Scrolls Online has finally introduced a much-requested feature after 11 long years of fans clamoring for it—subclasses. This exciting update is part of the game's 10th-anniversary celebrations, bringing a wave of fresh opportunities for players. Developer Zenimax Online Studios unveiled this development during the recent ESO Direct 2025 event held on April 10.

Over 3000 Skill Line Combinations

Elder Scrolls Online Subclasses Come After 11 Long Years of Fans Requesting It

Players have long faced the frustration of starting over whenever a new skill tree was introduced. To address this, subclasses are now available, allowing players to mix and match skill lines without needing to reroll their characters. This groundbreaking addition opens up 3000 possible combinations, giving players the freedom to explore countless playstyles.

According to Game Director Rich Lambert, extensive testing has been conducted, ensuring that the new feature aligns with the game’s balance. Despite concerns about potential power level spikes, the team remains confident about the outcome.

Seasonal Content and Storylines

In a shift towards more dynamic content delivery, Zenimax Online will now adopt a seasonal model. Studio Director Matt Firor emphasized that this approach will enable the developers to experiment with new ideas and address player feedback more effectively. Future seasons are expected to last between 3 to 6 months, offering a fresher pace compared to the traditional annual cycles.

The upcoming chapter, Seasons of the Worm Cult, marks a decade-long continuation of the game’s original Molag Bal storyline. Set on the Isle of Solstice, this chapter invites players to delve into the resurgence of the Worm Cult. Producer Susan Kath revealed that while this chapter will span much of the year, subsequent seasons will be shorter, with plans for "remix" seasons revisiting past narratives, including a Dark Brotherhood-themed installment.
