James Gunn Clarifies: No CG Used in Superman’s Flying Face in TV Spot

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn has addressed the online buzz surrounding Superman's flying face following the release of a new TV spot for the upcoming Superman movie. The 30-second video, which you can view below, features two new clips: Lex Luthor exiting a helicopter in a snowy wilderness, possibly in search of the Fortress of Solitude, and Superman performing a barrel roll as he flies over an icy landscape.

PlaySome viewers pointed out that Superman's face appeared unnaturally still, despite his hair and cape billowing in the wind, sparking discussions about "wonky CGI." However, Gunn quickly clarified on Threads that no CGI was used on Superman's face in this shot. Responding to a fan's comment about refining the CG, Gunn stated, "There is absolutely zero CG in his face. People’s faces can look different when you put a wide angle lens up close. The background plate in Svalbard is 100% real as is David." Svalbard, the Norwegian archipelago, served as a filming location for parts of the movie.

This means that the facial expression seen on David Corenswet, who plays Superman, is entirely natural, possibly captured with the aid of a large fan to simulate the wind effect. Despite Gunn's clarification, fans continue to debate the shot, drawing comparisons to the flying Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, another film written and directed by Gunn.

The excitement for the Superman movie remains high, as it is set to be the first film in the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, slated for release on July 11, 2025. IGN has provided extensive coverage on the film, including details on all the DC Heroes and Villains featured in the new trailer, insights from James Gunn on Krypto's mischievous behavior in the movie, reflections on the theme of hope central to Superman's character, and more.
