The future of Kingdom Hearts appears both exciting and potentially definitive, according to a recent interview with creator Tetsuya Nomura. He suggests Kingdom Hearts 4 will be a major turning point.

In an interview with Young Jump (translated by KH13), Nomura stated Kingdom Hearts 4 is being developed "with the intention of it being a story that leads to the conclusion." While not explicitly confirming a series end, this suggests the final saga may be upon us. The game initiates the "Lost Master Arc," a fresh narrative accessible to newcomers and veterans alike.

"Considering Kingdom Hearts III's ending, Sora's situation reflects a story 'reset'," Nomura explained. "Kingdom Hearts IV should be more approachable. Longtime fans will likely feel this is 'it,' but I hope many new players join us."

Nomura's comments hint at a potential main storyline conclusion, but the series' history is full of twists. A seemingly definitive ending might be open to interpretation, paving the way for spin-offs or side stories. The series' extensive cast offers potential for future adventures, especially with Nomura's confirmation of new writers joining the Kingdom Hearts universe.

"Kingdom Hearts Missing Link and Kingdom Hearts IV prioritize being new titles, not just sequels," Nomura told Young Jump. "We've included writers new to the series as an experiment. I'll oversee the editing, but it won't feel like a continuation based on established lore."

This injection of new talent is exciting, potentially revitalizing the narrative while preserving beloved elements. Fresh perspectives could bring innovative gameplay and unexplored territory within the Disney and Square Enix collaboration.

However, Nomura's creative vision, while integral to the series' success (and occasional confusion), is accompanied by his consideration of retirement in a few years. He poses a challenge: "If this isn't a dream, with only a few years until retirement, will I retire or finish the series first?"

A New Arc, A Fresh Start

Announced in April 2022, Kingdom Hearts 4 is under development. The first trailer shows the start of the "Lost Master Arc." Details remain scarce, but it reveals Sora awakening in Quadratum, a world Nomura described in a 2022 Famitsu interview as an alternate reality.

"Perspectives shape perception," Nomura stated (translated by VGC). "To Sora, Quadratum is an underworld, fictional. But to Quadratum's inhabitants, it's reality, and Sora's world is the fictional one."

According to Nomura's Young Jump interview, this Tokyo-inspired, dreamlike world is not entirely new; he conceived it during the first game's development.

Unlike previous whimsical, Disney-centric worlds, Quadratum offers a more grounded, realistic setting. This, along with increased visual fidelity, necessitates a reduction in Disney worlds.

"Kingdom Hearts IV will feature some Disney worlds," Nomura told GameInformer in 2022. "Increased specs limit world creation. We're strategizing, but Disney worlds will be present."

While fewer Disney worlds are a change, streamlining could create a more focused narrative, mitigating the complexity that sometimes overwhelmed players, even if legal considerations aren't the primary factor.

Whether Kingdom Hearts 4 concludes the series or starts a new chapter, it will be a significant moment for Sora and his companions. For many fans, a full-circle conclusion under Nomura's guidance, though bittersweet, would be an epic end to a story spanning over two decades.
