PGA Tour 2K25: A Solid Swing, But Not a Home Run
A hypothetical poll asking which pro sports game series 2K should tackle next would likely crown NFL 2K the undisputed champion. However, 2K is instead teeing off with PGA Tour 2K25, and after a few hours of gameplay, it's clear there's much to appreciate.
HB Studios, the developer, has been refining its golf game for over a decade, starting with The Golf Club. This experience shines through in 2K25, with few noticeable flaws. While not the most visually stunning sports game, and lacking an extensive real-world course roster (though it does include the PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open Championship), the core gameplay is enjoyable. Minor issues, like occasional framerate hiccups on PC, were easily overlooked.
The improved EvoSwing mechanic is a highlight. Controller users will appreciate the right stick control; pulling down to wind up and pushing forward to strike. Difficulty settings allow for both forgiving and challenging experiences, catering to casual and hardcore players alike. The ability to shape shots using LB and adjust tee shots laterally adds further strategic depth. Improved ball physics and the option to play as Tiger Woods (this year's cover athlete) enhance the overall experience.
MyCareer mode receives a boost with engaging narrative mechanics. The inclusion of Christopher McDonald (though not as Shooter McGavin due to licensing) adds a humorous touch. Choices impact stat boosts, and earned VC influences both stats and gear. The addition of regularly refreshed Quests provides ongoing goals.
MyPlayer creation, while not extensively explored, offers a satisfying level of customization, including skill trees. Multiplayer options, including ranked matchmaking and cross-platform Societies, promise engaging casual fun, reminiscent of classic golf games. Asynchronous multiplayer accommodates players in different time zones.
PGA Tour 2K25 excels in its consistent competence rather than groundbreaking innovation. While this might not generate overwhelming excitement, it appears to be a solid choice for golf enthusiasts and those seeking a relaxing gaming experience. A playable demo is currently available.
