Pokémon TCG Pocket Players Blown Away After Discovering Some Cards Reference Iconic Game Boy Locations

Author : George Apr 01,2025

Fans of the Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket have been raving about the stunning card art for months, but a recent discovery has sparked even more excitement. It turns out that some of the monsters featured on these cards are cleverly hiding details that tie them directly to the beloved Game Boy games.

The intrigue began over the weekend when Reddit user asch_win pointed out some intriguing landmarks in the background of a Spearow card. This Normal/Flying type Pokémon is depicted amidst grass, a fence, trees, and two distinctive buildings. As asch_win noted, the purple and yellow building in the background is none other than the Celadon City Department Store from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Just to the left of Celadon City lies Route 16, known for its fenced-in grassy area where players can encounter Spearow.

It's clear that the developers at Creatures Inc. and DeNA have meticulously crafted these cards to pay homage to the iconic games that propelled Pokémon to its legendary status. But the fun doesn't end with Spearow. Another Reddit user, jteede, discovered additional connections to the early titles, including a full-art Diglett card situated just East of Vermillion City and a Haunter card near the haunting Lavender Town tower. asch_win even used a magnifying glass to uncover hidden references in Supporter cards, linking them to specific locations in Pokémon history.

While many card illustrations depict Pokémon in whimsical, dreamlike settings seemingly detached from the established lore, some cards, like a Pikachu variant, are recognizable as collectibles in the real world. Others are exclusive to Pokémon TCG Pocket, where players are uncovering these cleverly hidden Easter Eggs.

The Pokémon TCG Pocket community has been buzzing all weekend, meticulously examining other cards for more references. Notable finds include the S.S. Anne cruise liner subtly featured in a Gyarados full art card and a trio of Oddish, Venonat, and Bellsprout cards that weave a story set near the seaside Snorlax from FireRed and LeafGreen.

Since its launch for mobile gaming enthusiasts in October, Pokémon TCG Pocket has released one additional booster expansion set titled Mythical Island, bringing the total to four packs available. More sets are expected in the future, with new cards occasionally being added through Wonder Pick Events and other updates. As Creatures and DeNA continue to release cards spanning the series’ various generations, players should stay vigilant for more hidden references.

In the meantime, you can dive into details about the current Wonder Pick event, which highlights Charmander and Squirtle. Also, don't miss out on why the developers are keeping quiet about whether pack choice matters or not.
