PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not for Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including Amazon and PlayStation Direct, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems from the PS5 Digital Edition's initial release without a disc drive in 2020, a trend continued with the disc-less PS5 Pro in 2024. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a disc drive separately. This has created significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony accessory has been consistently unavailable for months.
While some retailers have restocked since the start of the year, availability remains limited. As of January 15th, Amazon US and PlayStation Direct offer the drive for its standard $79.99 MSRP. A third-party Walmart seller was also found, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with only a few units remaining.
Where to Buy a PS5 Disc Drive (Currently):
Store | Price |
---|---|
Amazon | $79.99 |
PlayStation Direct | $79.99 |
Walmart (Reseller) | $122 |
PlayStation Direct Purchase Limits:
PlayStation Direct limits orders to one disc drive per customer, a common practice to deter scalpers. This has been implemented for other high-demand products, including the PlayStation Portal and anniversary consoles.
The ongoing US shortage, mirroring a similar situation in the UK since late 2024, is possibly linked to the November 7th PS5 Pro launch. Unlike the standard PS5, the Pro model doesn't offer a disc drive option, forcing users wanting both the Pro's capabilities and physical media playback to purchase the drive separately.
With continued out-of-stock status at major retailers like Walmart, GameStop, and Best Buy, the shortage is far from resolved. The duration of this scarcity remains uncertain.
