If you ever questioned whether *Rune Slayer* qualifies as an MMORPG, let this serve as your proof: it has fishing. And as every seasoned gamer knows, if a game includes fishing, it's officially part of the MMORPG club. But don’t worry—we're not here to debate genres. You’re here to learn how to fish in *Rune Slayer*, and we’ve got you covered. Spoiler alert: It’s not quite as straightforward as casting a line into water.
Before You Start Fishing in Rune Slayer
To begin your journey into the art of angling, you must first **accept the fishing quest from Simon the Fisherman**—the white-haired NPC located at one of the piers where the Baracuda swims by. This quest tasks you with catching 5 “fish,” and upon completion, rewards you with a Tackle Box (we’ll explain the quotes shortly).
Now here’s the catch: **you can't just grab a fish out of thin air**. To get started, you need a **fishing rod and bait**, and who better to provide those than Simon himself?
Purchase a **Wood Fishing Rod** and some **Worms** from Simon. While many players suggest having at least 5 worms, we recommend grabbing 10 just to be safe. And no—you won’t be equipping the bait. The Worm simply needs to be in your inventory. Each time you successfully reel something in, one Worm will be consumed automatically.
Here’s the real trick: **You can't fish unless you have at least 5 bait items in your inventory**. We tested this with just one worm and couldn’t catch anything. Once we had 5 worms, we were finally able to start fishing. To keep track, consider placing the Worms in your hotbar for easy visibility.
How to Catch Fish in Rune Slayer
- Select your Wood Fishing Rod—you can’t technically “equip” it, so place it in your hotbar or access it directly from your inventory. Your character will hold it in both hands when active.
- Hold M1 to cast your line, making sure it lands in a body of water. The pier near Simon works perfectly.
- Watch the bobber carefully. When it ripples once or twice, click M1 again to reel in your catch.
Be warned: success isn’t guaranteed. More often than not, you'll come up empty-handed or pull in junk like Old Cups. However, the good news is that Simon counts all catches—including junk—as valid (which explains the earlier quotation marks).
Repeat the process until you've reeled in five total catches. For reference, we only caught two actual fish but still completed the quest thanks to the system accepting junk as progress.
Completing the Fishing Quest
Once you’ve caught five “fish,” return to **Simon the Fisherman** to complete the quest. He’ll reward you with a Tackle Box. Open it and store all your remaining Worms inside. From now on, you won’t have to clutter your inventory with bait anymore.
