Sony Has Good News and Bad News on PlayStation 5 Themes

Author : Olivia Mar 25,2025

Sony has provided an update regarding the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes for the PS5, along with insights into the potential for more themes in the future.

In a recent tweet, Sony announced that these beloved classic themes will be removed from the PS5 starting tomorrow, January 31, 2025. However, fans can breathe a sigh of relief as Sony has promised that these nostalgic themes will make a comeback in the future. "Thank you for the fantastic response to the classic PlayStation, PS2, PS3, and PS4 limited-time console themes, which will be leaving tomorrow," Sony stated. "Due to the positive response on these 4 themes, we’re doing some work behind the scenes to bring these special designs back in the months ahead."

Unfortunately, Sony also shared less encouraging news. In a follow-up tweet, they confirmed that there are no plans to introduce new themes beyond the current selection. "While there aren’t plans to create additional themes in the future, we're excited to keep celebrating legacy PlayStation hardware with you all," Sony's statement read.

This announcement has left many fans disappointed, as themes have been a cherished feature in previous PlayStation consoles but have not been included in the PS5. The community's reaction was swift, expressing their wish for more customization options on the current console generation.

The nostalgia themes, introduced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of PlayStation on December 3, 2024, allow PS5 users to transform their home screen and menus to mimic the iconic designs of the PSOne, PS2, PS3, and PS4. The PSOne theme features the classic console on the home screen background, the PS2 theme incorporates its unique menu shapes, the PS3 theme includes its distinctive wave background, and the PS4 theme adds similar wave patterns. Each theme also includes the corresponding console's sound effects, adding to the immersive nostalgic experience.
