Top MicroSD Express Cards for Nintendo Switch 2

Author : Madison May 05,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 is on the horizon, and with its launch imminent, it's crucial to understand its storage limitations. The console comes with just 256GB of built-in storage, which might not suffice for avid gamers who want to keep multiple games installed. To avoid the hassle of constantly uninstalling and reinstalling games, you'll need to expand that storage. However, unlike its predecessor, the Nintendo Switch 2 requires a MicroSD Express card for storage expansion. These cards are faster but pricier than the UHS-based SD cards used in the original Switch.

MicroSD Express cards have been around for a while, but they haven't been widely adopted by creative professionals. With the imminent launch of the Nintendo Switch 2, expect a surge in the availability of these cards. Although the system isn't out yet, so I haven't tested any of these cards, most are from reputable manufacturers known for quality storage solutions.

Why MicroSD Express?

The Nintendo Switch 2 mandates the use of MicroSD Express cards for storage expansion, though Nintendo hasn't fully explained this decision. However, it's likely due to the console's internal storage, which uses UFS flash memory similar to that in smartphones. This is faster than the eMMC drive in the original Switch, and Nintendo probably wants to ensure consistent high-speed performance whether games are stored internally or on an expansion card.

Note that regular MicroSD cards can only be used for storing screenshots and videos from the original Switch. Unlike the PS5, which supports slower external drives for last-gen games, the Nintendo Switch 2 has no such flexibility. If you want to expand your storage, a MicroSD Express card is essential.

1. Lexar Play Pro

The Best MicroSD Express Card

Lexar Play Pro

The Lexar Play Pro stands out as the fastest and most capacious MicroSD Express card currently available. Boasting read speeds up to 900MB/s and a 1TB option, it's the top choice for expanding your Nintendo Switch 2 storage. However, due to high demand, it's currently hard to find in stock. Keep an eye on retailers like Adorama, which has it on backorder until July. If you're looking for the best performance, the Lexar Play Pro, particularly the 1TB version, is worth the wait.

2. SanDisk MicroSD Express

The MicroSD Express Card You Can Actually Buy Right Now

SanDisk MicroSD Express

SanDisk, a trusted name in SD cards, now offers a MicroSD Express card. While it lacks a fancy name and tops out at 256GB, it's a reliable option that effectively doubles your Switch 2's internal storage. With read speeds up to 880MB/s, it's slightly slower than the Lexar Play Pro but still offers solid performance. The SanDisk MicroSD Express is more readily available, making it a convenient choice if you want to expand your storage without delay.

3. Samsung MicroSD Express for Switch 2

The Official Option We Know Very Little About

Nintendo Samsung MicroSD Express

Samsung's MicroSD Express card, sold directly by Nintendo, adds a layer of official endorsement to your storage expansion. However, details about its speed and available capacities are scarce. It's currently listed with a 256GB option, but whether this will be the only size available remains to be seen. While specifics are pending, the assurance of Nintendo's backing might be comforting. I've reached out to Samsung for more information and will update this article as soon as I have it.

MicroSD Express FAQ

How fast is MicroSD Express?

MicroSD Express cards are significantly faster than their older counterparts, thanks to their use of PCI Express 3.1, similar to SSDs in PCs. While full-sized SD Express cards can reach up to 3,940MB/s, MicroSD Express cards max out at 985MB/s. This speed is still a substantial improvement over the MicroSD cards used in the original Nintendo Switch.

How long will a MicroSD Express card last?

Like all SD cards, MicroSD Express cards aren't designed for long-term data storage. Their lifespan can vary based on usage and environmental conditions, typically lasting 5-10 years. It's wise to back up important data regularly to ensure you don't lose anything crucial.
