The developers and publishers of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2*, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive, have firmly stated that they are not aiming to transform the game into a "full live service" model. This clarification comes in response to community backlash over recent events, which some players felt promoted "FOMO" or the fear of missing out—a tactic often used by live service games to encourage quick engagement and spending on time-limited virtual items.
FOMO is a common strategy in the gaming industry, where players are urged to acquire limited-time items, with the implication that missing the window means missing the opportunity forever. This approach has drawn criticism for fostering an unhealthy relationship between games and their communities. A 2021 study commissioned by the UK's GambleAware charity highlighted how games use psychological tactics, including FOMO, to encourage purchases of loot boxes.
While *Space Marine 2* does not include loot boxes, the introduction of community events for unlocking exclusive cosmetics has sparked concerns among players. Some have gone so far as to label the game a "live service" due to these events.
In response to the feedback, Focus Entertainment and Saber Interactive acknowledged the "cold feedback" regarding the community events. They reassured players that all items introduced in these events would be made available again later for everyone. In their statement, they emphasized that the intention behind community events was to offer dedicated players a chance to unlock items early, not to create stress or frustration. They also apologized for any inconvenience and announced plans to simplify the process of unlocking these items.
To demonstrate their commitment to improving player experience, Focus Entertainment is offering the coveted emblem-less Mk VIII Errant Helmet for free to all players who link their PROS account to *Space Marine 2*. This helmet was part of the Imperial Vigil community event, previously only accessible to players who achieved victories with all six classes in Operations Mode before the event's end on March 3.
Players are eagerly awaiting the upcoming 7.0 update for *Space Marine 2*, which promises a new weapon, a new Operations map, and PvE Prestige Ranks. Last month, Focus and Saber addressed community concerns about content and outlined future plans for the game.
*Space Marine 2* achieved a record-breaking launch, selling 5 million copies and becoming the fastest-selling Warhammer video game ever.
