Game Introduction
Phỏm (also known as Tá lả or Tứ lơ khơ) is a popular Vietnamese card game, particularly prevalent in the northern regions. The names "Phỏm" and "Tá lả" reflect regional variations. The objective is to collect and discard cards to form sets called "Phỏm," minimizing the point value of remaining unmatched cards. Using a standard 52-card deck and diverse gameplay strategies, Phỏm offers engaging entertainment. It's a favorite pastime for family and friends during gatherings and holidays.
Key Terms:
- Phỏm: A set of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three or more cards of the same rank.
- Junk cards: Unmatched cards not part of any Phỏm.
- Ù: A player with three Phỏm (no junk cards) wins immediately.
- Stomach (Cọc): The remaining undealt cards.
- Móm: A player unable to form any Phỏm at the end of the game.
- Take the pin (Ăn cọc): Taking an opponent's discarded card in the final round.
- Send (Chốt): Discarding a card in the final round that completes an opponent's Phỏm. This card doesn't count against the player's score.
- Compensation (Bù): If a player takes an opponent's pin and another player subsequently achieves Ù, the pin-taker compensates. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
- Re (Rút): If a player discards and another player subsequently plays, the discarded cards are retrieved, and the discarding player gets another turn.
Gameplay:
- Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) receives 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
- Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the player holding 10 cards.
- Playing: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can either take the discarded card to form a Phỏm or draw from the Stomach. After taking or drawing, a card is discarded.
- Game End: The game ends when a player achieves Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù. In the latter case, scores are calculated based on remaining junk cards.
- Final Round: Players must complete their Phỏm, send cards where possible, and discard their final card.
- Scoring: The lowest score wins. A, J, Q, K are 1, 11, 12, and 13 points respectively. Other cards are face value. Ties are broken by who discarded first.
- 1st place: +6 points
- 2nd place: -1 point
- 3rd place: -2 points
- 4th place: -3 points
- Pin taker: -4 points
- Pin receiver: +4 points
- Ù: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
- Móm: Loses 4 points to the winner.
