A Retro Gaming Retrospective: Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS Titles on Nintendo Switch
This article takes a unique look at the surprisingly limited selection of Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS ports available on the Nintendo Switch eShop, excluding those found within the Nintendo Switch Online app. We've compiled a list of ten standout titles – four GBA and six DS – showcasing the best of what's available beyond the subscription service. No specific ranking is implied.
Game Boy Advance Gems
Steel Empire (2004) – Part of Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off is the GBA version of Steel Empire, a solid shoot 'em up. While the Genesis/Mega Drive original holds a slight edge in my opinion, this port provides a worthwhile alternative, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Even those typically averse to shooters may find themselves captivated by its charm.
Mega Man Zero – Included in Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA as a worthy successor. This inaugural entry, while exhibiting some minor rough edges, lays the foundation for an excellent side-scrolling action series. It's the perfect starting point for exploring this compelling saga.
Mega Man Battle Network – Included in Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A second Mega Man entry warrants inclusion due to its stark contrast with Mega Man Zero. Mega Man Battle Network is a unique RPG boasting a blend of strategic and action elements within its innovative battle system. The game's clever concept of a virtual world inhabiting electronic devices is fully realized, offering a highly engaging experience.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
While the Castlevania Advance Collection contains multiple worthwhile titles, Aria of Sorrow stands out as a personal favorite, even surpassing the acclaimed Symphony of the Night for me on occasion. Its engaging soul-collecting system and addictive gameplay make the grinding a rewarding experience. A truly exceptional third-party GBA title.
Nintendo DS Standouts
Shantae: Risky's Revenge – Director's Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic, Shantae: Risky's Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This title solidified Shantae's popularity, ensuring her continued presence across subsequent console generations. Interestingly, its origins trace back to an unreleased GBA game, which is slated for release soon.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Part of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA game in its origins (though not localized then), Ace Attorney needs no introduction. This captivating adventure game masterfully blends investigation and courtroom drama, seasoned with humorous elements and compelling narratives. The first game sets a high bar, though later installments are equally strong.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick offers a similarly well-crafted narrative with unique gameplay. As a ghost, you must utilize your abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery surrounding your own death. A captivating and often overlooked title, deserving of recognition.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, The World Ends With You is best experienced on its original hardware. However, the Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, offering a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Part of Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits significantly from the improved button controls replacing the original touch controls. However, all three games are highly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Part of Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
Though challenging to perfectly replicate outside the DS/3DS ecosystem, Atlus has successfully ported Etrian Odyssey III. This substantial RPG, the largest of the three, offers a rewarding, albeit occasionally complex, experience.
