This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to dwindling retro consoles with diverse game libraries. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, creating a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, now everyone can enjoy them. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated 2.5D platformer, follows a floppy-eared creature through a dream world to thwart a looming threat. It boasts vibrant visuals, engaging gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are a must-have.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark JRPG, Final Fantasy VII introduced the genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and a key driver of the PlayStation's triumph. While a remake exists, the original offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, catapulting it to mainstream success. Though later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a compelling, action-packed adventure, less philosophical and more reminiscent of G.I. Joe. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shooter into 3D. While its polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, the vibrant colors, innovative enemy-capture mechanic, and creative boss designs create a captivating shooter experience.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the impossible task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits. Beyond comparisons, it's a cleverly designed, visually stunning RPG with a large, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters and an unforgettable soundtrack.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While my love for Mega Man games might be nostalgic, Mega Man X4 stands out for its superior polish compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this standout entry and judge for yourself.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
Tomba! is a unique platformer blending adventure game elements with solid action. Created by the Ghosts ‘n Goblins developer, it initially appears easy but presents a significant challenge.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Sharing the spirit of Lunar, Grandia offers a bright, cheerful adventure with a satisfying combat system.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut, focusing on tomb raiding rather than action, is arguably the best of the Core Design era. This collection allows players to experience the first three games.
moon ($18.99)
A Japanese-exclusive title, moon deconstructs the RPG genre, offering a more adventure-game-like experience with a unique, almost "punk" aesthetic. While not consistently fun, its unconventional approach and message are compelling.
This concludes the list. Share your favorite PlayStation 1 games on the Switch in the comments! Thanks for reading!
