As someone who prioritizes practicality in spending, I typically stick to purchasing essentials and the occasional discounted video game. However, last year marked a departure from my usual restraint when I decided to indulge in a LEGO set—a nostalgic return to my childhood hobby. Despite the high cost of LEGO, especially sets linked to popular franchises, I finally caved and bought the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant. It had been on sale since October of the previous year for under $50, and I convinced myself that my desk needed a new, albeit quirky, potted plant.

My interest in the Piranha Plant set was sparked after reading an engaging build review on IGN. Being a long-time fan of Mario games, this set seemed like the perfect way to showcase my love for the franchise. While LEGO's botanical collection offers beautiful desk decor, nothing matches the whimsical terror of this Piranha Plant.

Now that I've built the set, it's a delightful addition to my desk. It transports me to the Mushroom Kingdom, where I tend to my little Piranha Plant during work hours. The building process was as enjoyable as the final product; it took an afternoon but kept me engaged throughout. This is currently the only LEGO Nintendo set I own, but my experience has me considering adding more to my collection.

How Much Are You Willing to Spend on a LEGO Set You Love?
The world of LEGO can be pricey, with adult-targeted sets often priced at $200 or more. It's easy to get swept up in the excitement and overspend on these intricate creations. However, the LEGO Super Mario Piranha Plant, at under $50, felt like a justifiable indulgence. The hours spent building it and the joy it brings me daily reaffirm that decision. While the happiness it brings might be worth more than $50, that's the limit I set for myself on such purchases.
