Avowed boasts a rich character creator, allowing players to shape their character's physical appearance and choose a Background, which provides a pre-game backstory and narrative context. This guide details each of Avowed's five Backgrounds and their impact on gameplay.
Avowed offers five distinct Backgrounds: Arcane Scholar, Court Augur, Noble Scion, Vanguard Scout, and War Hero. While each offers unique dialogue options and a starting weapon, all equipment and abilities remain accessible regardless of choice.

Arcane Scholar: This scholarly Background provides dialogue options reflecting an academic past. Graduating from Bragganhyl Academy, your character's treatise on soul lineages incurred the wrath of a local lord, leading to arrest, but ultimately recruitment into the imperial court archives. Expect dialogue reflecting knowledge of the occult, law, history, and poetry.

Court Augur: This Background features a tragic backstory, marked by visions and suspicion. Following a village crop failure, the character's insights were misinterpreted, forcing a flight to Highcrown, where the emperor appointed them as a personal mystic. Expect dialogue reflecting spiritual awareness and interaction with magic and the Gods. This is ideal for players envisioning a wizard-like character, and they'll likely find common ground with the Giatta companion.

Starting Weapons:
Each Background provides a Common-quality, one-handed melee weapon:
