The Blade Runner universe has flourished in comic book form, with Titan Comics expanding this cyberpunk world through compelling spinoffs and prequels. Currently running is Blade Runner: Tokyo Nexus, making history as the franchise's first story set in Japan.
During IGN Fan Fest 2025, we spoke with writers Kianna Shore and Mellow Brown about their fresh take on the Blade Runner aesthetic in this new setting. Below you'll find an exclusive behind-the-scenes gallery showcasing the visual development process:

This marks Blade Runner's first Japanese setting, despite Tokyo being iconic in cyberpunk classics like Akira and Ghost in the Shell. The writers shared how they envisioned this alternate 2015 Tokyo compared to the grimy Los Angeles of the films.
"Developing Tokyo's Blade Runner interpretation was incredibly rewarding," Shore told IGN. "Having lived in Japan during 2015, plus visiting future-focused Tokyo exhibits, I wanted our version distinct from L.A. - less dystopian, more hopeful."
"L.A.'s neon facade hides decay," Brown added. "Our Tokyo presents a beautiful prison - orderly paradise masking terrifying consequences for disobedience. Equally oppressive, just differently."
Rather than mimicking famous anime, the team drew from modern Japanese media and societal trends. Shore studied post-2011 disaster narratives like Your Name and Japan Sinks 2020, while Brown avoided rehashing shows already Blade Runner-inspired.
Set just before the original film, Tokyo Nexus offers standalone storytelling while enriching franchise lore. Shore confirmed familiar elements like Tyrell Corporation's influence remain, though new readers can enjoy it independently. Brown teased deeper connections to prior Titan comics, including revelations about the Kalanthia War and Tyrell's replicant monopoly.
The story centers on human investigator Mead and replicant partner Stix - battle-worn allies whose deep bond borders on codependence. "Their relationship shows how war can make humans mechanical and replicants emotional," Brown explained.
As Cheshire Corporation challenges Tyrell's replicant dominance, our protagonists get caught in a dangerous power struggle. Shore described Cheshire's military replicants as potentially superior to Tyrell's models. Brown hinted this criminal organization's acquisition of rogue Tyrell scientists could reshape the entire replicant landscape.
