Capcom Producer Hints at Marvel vs. Capcom 2 Original Character Returns
Capcom producer Shuhei Matsumoto has fueled speculation about the return of beloved original characters from Marvel vs. Capcom 2 in future Capcom fighting games. Speaking at EVO 2024, Matsumoto stated that the possibility of their return "is always there," particularly given the upcoming release of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics.
This remastered collection, which includes Marvel vs. Capcom 2, features three original characters: Amingo, Ruby Heart, and SonSon. While absent from most recent entries, their cameo appearances in Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Capcom card fighter games suggest continued interest from Capcom.
Matsumoto emphasized that the collection's release will reintroduce these characters to a wider audience. He suggested that significant fan interest could lead to their inclusion in future titles like Street Fighter 6 or other fighting games outside the Versus series. This, he explained, would expand Capcom's creative options and content pool.
The Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection itself is the result of years of planning and collaboration with Marvel. Matsumoto expressed Capcom's desire to create new Versus titles and re-release other legacy fighting games on modern platforms with updated features like rollback netcode. However, he acknowledged the challenges involved, including scheduling and collaborations with external parties.
Matsumoto concluded that re-releasing classic titles is currently the best way to gauge fan interest and potentially pave the way for future projects. The success of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection will undoubtedly play a significant role in determining the future of these beloved characters and other legacy fighting games.
