Carrie-Anne Moss has opened up about the controversy surrounding her character’s early demise in The Acolyte, the short-lived Star Wars Disney+ series. Despite knowing from the start that her Jedi Master Indara wouldn’t survive past the first episode, Moss admitted she didn’t anticipate the intensity of fan backlash that followed.
In the show’s premiere, titled Lost / Found, Indara is swiftly killed off by Mae (Amandla Stenberg), revealed later to be Osha’s twin sister. The intense cold open sees Mae provoke a duel with Indara—forcing the Jedi Master to attack at full strength—only to overpower and kill her. For some fans, this moment felt like a wasted opportunity for an iconic performer like Moss, especially given her prominent presence in promotional material.
Leslye Headland, the series’ creator, defended the decision, explaining that it was crucial to establish the danger facing the Jedi Order early on. “From a filmmaker perspective, I just felt like with the cold open, especially with a new story, that you just have to go hard,” Headland told GamesRadar. “You have to say the Jedi are going to take some Ls; you're not going to know who the good guys and the bad guys are.”
She continued: “Even if you already know it's going to happen, it doesn't have to be a big gotcha moment. It just has to be a moment where the emotional and the physical — meaning the fights — melt together. Carrie-Anne, not just being an action legend, is also a phenomenal actress. She was able to play all those beats within the fight as well as, of course, her death scene.”
Still, many viewers expressed disappointment online shortly after the episode aired. Some criticized the brevity of Moss’ screen time, while others questioned the marketing strategy that featured Indara prominently, only for her to be eliminated so early.

Reflecting on the reaction during a recent interview with Business Insider, Moss acknowledged that she understood the narrative choice but admitted she hadn’t predicted how strongly fans would respond. “The reaction to it from the fans, I kind of thought, ‘Wow, how did I not think of that?’” she said. “I mean, I serve the writers and the directors. It didn't cross my mind. But afterward, when people made a big deal about it, I was like, ‘How did I miss that?’ I didn't think it would be a big deal at all.”
While Indara does return briefly in flashbacks later in the season, for many fans, the damage had already been done. Compounding matters, Disney decided not to renew The Acolyte for a second season, leaving several key plotlines unresolved—including the live-action debut of the enigmatic Darth Plagueis.

Since the cancellation, several cast members have expressed their desire to return. Manny Jacinto, who portrayed Qimir, mentioned that Darth Plagueis would have played a larger role in future seasons of The Acolyte, though he remained tight-lipped to avoid spoilers: “We could come back.”
Lee Jung-jae, who played Sol, stated he was surprised by the decision, noting that even before Season 1 premiered, Leslye Headland had ideas for a follow-up. On the other hand, Amandla Stenberg wasn’t taken aback. “I’m going to be transparent and say that it's not a huge shock for me,” she shared. “I was in the bubble of my own reality, but for those who aren't aware there's been a rampage of vitriol that we've faced since the show was even announced.”
Jodie Turner-Smith, who played Mother Aniseya, also voiced concerns, criticizing Disney for not offering enough support to the cast amid a wave of racist abuse online. “They’ve got to stop doing this thing where they don’t say anything when people are getting f**king dog-piled on the internet with racism and bullsht,” she said.
Despite the uncertainty, Manny Jacinto remains hopeful, calling the production of Season 2 his life’s mission not long after the show’s cancellation.

The Acolyte earned a 6/10 in IGN's review. We said: "The Acolyte takes us to an earlier era of Star Wars than we’ve seen on screen with mixed results. Awkward dialogue and a small scope rob it of some of the series’ signature space magic, but these old-school Jedi are a thrill to watch in action."
