Rumors of an Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion remake, slated for a 2025 release, have surfaced online, fueled by a purported leak of development details. Mp1st reported that a former employee at Virtuos, a video game support studio, allegedly leaked information about the unannounced project. Microsoft declined to comment when contacted by IGN.
According to Mp1st, Virtuos utilized Unreal Engine 5 to remake Bethesda's acclaimed open-world RPG, suggesting a substantial overhaul rather than a simple remaster. The leak also detailed gameplay adjustments, including modifications to Stamina, Sneak, Blocking, Archery, Hit Reactions, and the HUD.
The Blocking system, Mp1st claims, was redesigned with action games and Soulslikes in mind, addressing criticisms of its original "boring" and "frustrating" mechanics. Sneak icons are now reportedly highlighted, damage calculations have been revamped, and the Stamina depletion knockdown is allegedly harder to trigger. The HUD underwent a redesign for improved clarity. Hit reactions were added for more responsive feedback, and Archery mechanics were modernized for both first-person and third-person perspectives.
News of an Oblivion remaster first emerged in 2023, surfacing in documents from the FTC vs. Microsoft trial concerning the Activision Blizzard acquisition. These documents, compiled in July 2020, listed several unannounced Bethesda games with projected release years. This list, which included Oblivion Remaster, also featured titles such as Indiana Jones, Doom Year Zero, Project Kestrel, and The Elder Scrolls VI, among others. Many of these titles experienced delays or cancellations. Doom Year Zero is now Doom: The Dark Ages, launching this year, and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle was released in December 2024. The Elder Scrolls VI also missed its projected release window.
The original Microsoft document referred to the project as a remaster. The current scope, however, appears to have expanded into a full remake. Bethesda's official announcement will clarify the situation.
Speculation regarding platform availability is rife. Given Microsoft's current multiplatform approach, and the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the Oblivion remake may launch on PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Leaker NateTheHate, who recently predicted the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal date, claims the Oblivion remake is set for a June release. This aligns with potential Switch 2 launch timing.
Microsoft's upcoming Xbox Developer Direct will feature id Software showcasing Doom: The Dark Ages. While Microsoft teased a new game from an undisclosed developer, it's unlikely to be Oblivion. Windows Central's Jez Corden hinted that the mystery game is a "new entry in a legendary Japanese IP with decades of history."
