Chris Evans, the star of the Captain America films, has definitively stated that he will not be reprising his role in Avengers: Doomsday or any other Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) project, despite recent reports suggesting otherwise. Evans directly refuted a Deadline article claiming his return alongside Robert Downey Jr., calling the report "not true."
This denial contradicts information shared by Anthony Mackie, who inherited the Captain America mantle. Mackie, while admitting he hasn't seen a script for Avengers: Doomsday, relayed his manager's claim that Evans would be returning. However, Mackie subsequently confirmed that Evans himself denied this, stating he is "happily retired." Evans reiterated this sentiment to Esquire, emphasizing that such rumors resurface periodically since Avengers: Endgame, and he no longer addresses them.
While Evans has returned to the MCU in a cameo as Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine, this was a smaller, comedic role significantly different from his central Captain America arc.
The MCU's future remains somewhat uncertain following the removal of Jonathan Majors from the franchise due to assault and harassment charges. Majors, who portrayed Kang, was poised to become a major antagonist, but his departure has reportedly caused upheaval in Marvel's plans.
Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr., has been announced as the new primary villain. This announcement fueled speculation about other original Avengers returning, though no official confirmation has been made beyond Downey Jr.'s involvement.
Benedict Cumberbatch, who plays Doctor Strange, confirmed his character's absence from Avengers: Doomsday, but will have a "central role" in its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars. The Russo Brothers are directing Avengers: Doomsday, which is expected to continue the multiverse storyline, with Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter also reportedly appearing.
