Nintendo Switch 2: Genki Reveals Key Features and Design Details
Genki, a prominent handheld gaming accessory manufacturer, recently showcased a 3D-printed Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025, revealing several key design features and confirming prior speculation. The mockup, reportedly based on a black market acquisition of the console, accurately reflects the Switch 2's dimensions and overall design.
Key features highlighted include a larger form factor, approaching the size of the Valve Steam Deck, magnetically attached Joy-Cons, a second USB-C port, and an enigmatic "C" button. Genki CEO Eddie Tsai confirmed the magnetic nature of the Joy-Cons, specifically noting the SL and SR buttons utilize magnets for attachment. A release mechanism involving a button on each Joy-Con disengages the magnetic connection. Despite the change from the original Switch's sliding rails, Tsai assures users the Joy-Cons remain securely attached during gameplay.
Further details emerged regarding the Joy-Cons' integration of optical sensors within their mounting channels. This suggests potential functionality as a mouse, a theory supported by recently leaked Switch 2 images showing what appear to be optical sensors.
While the Switch 2's increased size is notable, it remains slim enough to physically fit within the existing Nintendo Switch dock. However, structural differences prevent compatibility, rendering the original dock unusable. The purpose of the additional USB-C port and the "C" button remains a mystery, even to Genki.
