The Show is Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have exited the God of War TV adaptation. Despite having completed multiple scripts, Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
Key figures remaining on board include executive producer Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio Creative Director), along with Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio). Amazon and Sony will now search for a new showrunner, producers, and writers to redefine the series' direction. Importantly, the project remains uncancelled.
Despite Setbacks, the Future Remains Bright
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War TV series was initially announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, capitalizing on the success of the 2018 God of War reboot. This collaboration is part of Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises into film and television. This initiative led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. The announcement also included a Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, with more adaptations from established franchises to follow.
Successful adaptations already released include Uncharted (Naughty Dog, 2022), the critically acclaimed The Last of Us (season 2 slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (scheduled for release on April 25, 2025).
