NPIXEL has officially announced the closure of Gran Saga, concluding its brief international journey. The game will cease operations on April 30th, 2025, with in-app purchases and downloads already disabled.
Originally launched in Japan in 2021 to a warm reception, Gran Saga's global version was released in November 2024 but only managed to last for six months before the decision to shut down was made.
The closure is attributed to financial challenges and the inability to sustain a viable service. Despite an impressive start in Japan, Gran Saga struggled to establish itself in the fiercely competitive global market, which is dominated by well-established games with loyal fanbases. New entries need to offer something revolutionary to stand out, a feat Gran Saga couldn't achieve internationally.
This closure adds to the ongoing trend of gacha RPGs shutting down. Just last month, I reported on the end of My Hero Academia: The Strongest Hero, and it's not alone; several other games have also succumbed to the pressures of an oversaturated market. With so many options, players tend to stick with familiar titles, making it difficult for new or niche games to survive.
If you've made recent in-app purchases and are seeking a refund, you have until May 30th to submit your request. However, refunds may not be possible if you've used the items or due to other store policies.
For fans of Gran Saga's setting, Ethprozen, this closure is a bitter goodbye, reflecting a trend that's becoming increasingly common in the mobile gaming world.
