Rockstar's recently revamped Grand Theft Auto 5 has received a lukewarm reception on Steam since its early March release.
Grand Theft Auto 5 Enhanced, launched on March 4, currently holds a 'Mixed' user review rating on Steam, with only 54% of its 19,772 reviews being positive.
For comparison, the original GTA 5 version on Steam—now delisted at Rockstar's request and no longer appearing in search results—maintains a 'Very Positive' user rating.
In fact, GTA 5 Enhanced stands as the lowest-rated Grand Theft Auto title on Steam to date. Its nearest competitor for this dubious distinction, Grand Theft Auto III – The Definitive Edition, still manages 66% positive reviews.
GTA 5 Enhanced offers PC players a complimentary upgrade featuring highly requested elements previously exclusive to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of GTA Online. This includes the latest vehicles and performance enhancements from Hao's Special Works, wildlife encounters, GTA+ Membership accessibility, alongside visual improvements and reduced loading times. All current GTA 5 PC owners can transition to this enhanced edition at no cost while preserving their Story Mode and Online progression.

While this migration process should be seamless, numerous players report persistent account transfer issues. These migration problems constitute the primary complaint among the most prominently featured negative reviews.
"The GTA Online profile associated with this Rockstar Games account is not eligible for migration at this time," one frustrated player detailed. "Expecting me to abandon nearly 700 hours of character development just to generate additional revenue is utterly unacceptable."
"This version represents a clear regression from the original. I'll continue enjoying the Legacy edition until the next installment releases—whenever that may be."
Another reviewer expressed similar frustration: "My negative rating stems from Rockstar's arbitrary migration restrictions. Support services prove equally unhelpful, simply stating their inability to resolve the situation."
A further critical review noted: "Neither of my two accounts can migrate. Rockstar support remains completely ineffective. After a decade with this title, I refuse to restart my entire Online progression for marginally improved visuals and minor additions."
Despite these challenges, GTA 5 Enhanced maintains strong player engagement on Steam, reaching 187,059 concurrent users since launch. However, the situation raises concerns about Grand Theft Auto 6's eventual PC release, with some players worrying these technical difficulties might foreshadow similar launch problems.
Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled for fall 2025 release exclusively on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, leaving PC gamers waiting. In December 2023, a former Rockstar developer addressed the delayed PC launch timing and requested PC audiences maintain confidence in the studio's controversial release strategy.
Additional GTA 6 coverage includes Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick's comments regarding GTA Online's future alongside the new title. Simultaneously, Take-Two has initiated legal proceedings against PlayerAuctions marketplace, claiming it hosts "thousands of unauthorized GTA 5 listings—including extensively modified accounts, in-game assets, and virtual currency obtained through hacking software and exploits."
In related developments, Rockstar recently acquired Video Games Deluxe—development team behind Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition—rebranding it as Rockstar Australia.
