YouTuber Jacksepticeye, whose real name is Seán William McLoughlin, recently shared in his video titled 'A Bad Month' that he had been working on an animated show based on the survival horror game Soma. The project, which had been in development for a year, was abruptly canceled, leaving Jacksepticeye "quite upset." Soma, developed by Frictional Games and released in 2015, is a critically acclaimed game that Jacksepticeye has often praised and streamed extensively.
In the video, Jacksepticeye discussed the challenges he faced creatively over the past period, with several projects either being canceled or not progressing as hoped. He expressed his disappointment over the lack of content creation and then disclosed the Soma animated show project. He highlighted his passion for the game, describing it as one of the best stories in video game history and his eagerness to bring it to life in an animated format.
Jacksepticeye explained that the project fell apart suddenly after an unnamed party decided to take it in a "different direction." He chose not to delve into the specifics due to his frustration but emphasized how the cancellation disrupted his plans for 2025. He had intended to focus much of his year on the show, reducing his regular content uploads in anticipation of showcasing this major creative endeavor. The sudden collapse of the project left him feeling lost and frustrated, unsure of his priorities moving forward.
Following the release of Soma, Frictional Games went on to release two more entries in their Amnesia series: Amnesia: Rebirth in 2020 and Amnesia: The Bunker in 2023. In July 2023, Frictional's creative director Thomas Grip mentioned the company's intention to shift focus away from horror to explore other emotional qualities in their games. Grip emphasized the importance of immersive experiences and emotional storytelling beyond just creating scary scenarios.
