Core Boxes
Each core box in Monster Hunter World: The Board Game is a complete, standalone experience that includes four hunters and four monsters. These sets can be combined, allowing players to mix and match characters and monsters from different boxes. While the majority of components are unique to each set, there are some shared elements, including a few cards that become useful when combining sets.
Starting with a single core box is recommended, and if you find yourself hooked, you can expand your collection with smaller expansions or even a second core set. Both core boxes offer the same high-quality gameplay and stunning production values, including large monster miniatures that enhance the epic feel of the game. The choice between them should be based on your aesthetic preferences or favorite elements from the video game series.

Set in a lush primeval forest, this box features game boards in vibrant greens and browns, with monsters inspired by dinosaurs and tropical creatures. You'll encounter the lizard-like Great Jagras, the furred and scaled Tobi-Kadachi, the fearsome tyrannosaur Anjanath, and the majestic dragon Rathalos. The hunters equipped with classic weapons include Great Sword, Sword and Shield, Dual Blades, and Bow.

This set transports players to a badlands environment with rocky outcrops, desert, and swamp. The included monsters are the heavily-armored Barroth, the monstrous swamp-fish Jyuratodus, the bird-like Pukei-Pukei, and the underground behemoth Diablos. The hunters in this set use more unique weapons like the Charge Blade, Switch Axe, Heavy Bowgun, and Insect Glaive.
Retail Expansions
Following the Kickstarter campaign, several expansions were made available for pre-order, many of which are still accessible at retail. However, Nergigante is scarce, and Teostra is exclusively sold by Steamforged Games on their website.
Nergigante, Kushala Daora, and Teostra are Elder Dragons, adding a new tier of challenge with a five-star difficulty level and larger miniatures. These expansions enhance the base game with new quests and an epic boss fight, extending your campaign's scope.
While these expansions are tempting, they are pricey and some features are specific to one core box or the other. For example, Kushala Daora includes crafting weapons tailored for hunters from both Ancient Forest and Wildspire Waste. Therefore, considering a second core set might be the best way to expand your game before diving into these expansions.

Following the success of the initial lineup, Steamforged Games launched a Kickstarter for Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. While sharing core mechanics with the original, Iceborne introduces new concepts and is only partially compatible with the earlier boxes. You can use monsters and hunters across sets in arena games, but not for campaigns.
Iceborne features a single core box, Hoarfrost Reach, with four new monsters and hunters. Like the original, it includes Elder Dragons and a Hunter's Arsenal expansion, but instead of another core box, it offers three monster expansions: Absolute Power, Seething Anger, and Overpowering Hunger. Additional content unlocked during the campaign further enriches the experience.
Although the campaign has ended, you can still order items from the Iceborne range via Gamefound, ensuring you don't miss out on the latest additions to this thrilling board game series.
