Ninja Gaiden 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Double Dose of Ninja Action
The Xbox Developer Direct 2025 delivered a surprise for action game fans: the announcement of Ninja Gaiden 4 and the release of Ninja Gaiden 2 Black. Team Ninja, celebrating its 30th anniversary, declared 2025 "The Year of the Ninja."
Ninja Gaiden 4: A New Era Begins
Developed by Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, Ninja Gaiden 4 marks the series' return after a 13-year hiatus. This direct sequel to Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the series' signature challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames is a significant development, leveraging both studios' expertise in action game design.
A key element is the introduction of a new protagonist, Yakumo, a young ninja from the rival Raven clan. Art Director Tomoko Nishii (PlatinumGames) describes Yakumo as a character designed to stand alongside Ryu Hayabusa, the series' iconic hero. Producer and Director Yuji Nakao (PlatinumGames) explains the decision to introduce a new protagonist as a way to broaden the appeal of the series while still retaining the essence of Ninja Gaiden for long-time fans. Ryu Hayabusa remains a crucial part of the story and will be playable.
Revamped Combat and a New Style
Ninja Gaiden 4 retains the series' signature fast-paced, brutal combat. Yakumo introduces the Bloodbind Ninjutsu Nue Style alongside the Raven Style, offering diverse combat options. Team Ninja assures fans that the action will feel familiar while incorporating PlatinumGames' dynamic flair. The game is currently 70-80% complete and in the polishing phase.
Release Date and Availability
Ninja Gaiden 4 launches in Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It will be a day-one Xbox Game Pass title.
Ninja Gaiden 2 Black: A Remastered Classic
Simultaneously released, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is a remake of the 2008 Xbox 360 title. Available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5, and included with Xbox Game Pass, it features additional playable characters from Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2, offering a satisfying experience for both veterans and newcomers.
The release of both titles promises a significant resurgence for the Ninja Gaiden franchise. Team Ninja's collaboration with PlatinumGames, along with the updated classic, creates a compelling offering for fans and newcomers alike.
