Nintendo has provided our first detailed glimpse at a Nintendo Switch 2 game cartridge, in anticipation of the console's launch next month. The latest video released through the Nintendo Today app features a look at the official Switch 2 carry case, which includes slots for up to six Nintendo Switch 1 and Switch 2 cartridges, ensuring your games are safely stored.
As previously announced, Switch 2 cartridges maintain the same size and shape as their Switch 1 counterparts. This compatibility means the Switch 2 only requires a single cartridge slot to play games from both console generations. However, there's a notable distinction: the color of the cartridge. Switch 2 cartridges are distinctively red, a design choice that appears to be universal across all titles, not limited to the Mario Kart World cartridge shown in the video. If you haven't yet downloaded the Nintendo Today app, you can catch the video shared by OatmealDome on X/Twitter below.
The top of the cartridge's printed design sticker now features a Switch 2 logo, setting it apart from the original Nintendo Switch design. The official Switch 2 carrying case is designed to accommodate the console with the Joy-Con 2 attached, alongside six cartridges and two Joy-Con 2 straps.

Aside from the color and logo, Switch 2 cartridges are virtually identical to their predecessors, including the notorious foul-tasting coating applied by Nintendo to deter oral ingestion.
"We don't want anybody to be at risk of any unwanted consumption," Switch 2 director Takuhiro Dohta stated in a previous interview with GameSpot. "We have indeed made it so that if it enters your mouth, you'll spit it out."
