Following this morning's Nintendo Switch 2 unveiling, rumors suggesting Joy-Con functionality as a mouse seem increasingly plausible.
The reveal trailer showcases detached Joy-Cons placed attachment-side down on a surface. They connect to connectors with seemingly flat bottoms, moving across the surface like a mouse on a mousepad. A possible slider pad is visible on one connector, further supporting this theory.
Pre-reveal speculation centered on an internal Joy-Con sensor, similar to those in computer mice. However, Nintendo hasn't officially confirmed this feature or its implications. Fans envision uses in traditionally mouse-and-keyboard games like Civilization, while others anticipate innovative applications within Nintendo's first-party titles. The possibilities remain open.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding potential mouse support (and the function of a new Joy-Con button), several details are confirmed. The system is officially named Nintendo Switch 2, launching in 2025, with a new Mario Kart title in development. Backward compatibility with the original Switch is ensured, and further software announcements are promised in an April Direct. Stay updated on all our Nintendo Switch 2 coverage here.
