Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer a novel functionality: operating as makeshift computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, the possibility aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative experimentation.
The intriguing evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, known for uncovering Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has fueled numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
In early January 2025, LiC revealed further findings: shipping manifests mentioning polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles," typically used on the bottom of computer mice, and intended "to stick to game console handles." This strongly suggests the Switch 2 could incorporate mouse-like functionality.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These haven't been found in public component databases, hinting at unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, allows its right controller to function as a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic piece to aid smooth surface movement.
The Legion GO also features magnetic rails for controller attachment, a feature also rumored for the Switch 2. This similarity provides a potential glimpse into the design direction of Nintendo's next hybrid console.
