Obsidian Entertainment's CEO, Feargus Urquhart, recently provided an update on the development of The Outer Worlds 2 and Avowed, revealing steady progress despite past hurdles.
Obsidian's Confidence in Upcoming Releases
According to Urquhart, *The Outer Worlds 2* is progressing well. He praised the development team, highlighting their experience with the original game and their dedication to the sequel. "I'm impressed with the team," he stated, emphasizing their understanding of the project. However, Urquhart acknowledged significant challenges, particularly the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and the studio's acquisition by Microsoft. Simultaneous development of multiple titles, including Grounded and Pentiment, placed considerable strain on resources. He candidly admitted a period of slowed development, even mentioning discussions about pausing The Outer Worlds 2 to focus solely on Avowed. Ultimately, Obsidian chose to persevere with all projects.
"We got acquired, then Covid hit," Urquhart recounted, describing the juggling act of completing Outer Worlds, its DLC, advancing Avowed, and initiating The Outer Worlds 2 and Grounded, all while Josh Sawyer worked on Pentiment.
Despite the setbacks, Urquhart expressed satisfaction with the results, noting the success of Grounded and Pentiment, and highlighting the promising progress of both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2. While specific details on game content remain undisclosed, the delay of Avowed to 2025 suggests potential timeline adjustments for other projects.
Announced in 2021, The Outer Worlds 2 has seen limited updates. Urquhart acknowledged this and the possibility of a launch delay, mirroring the situation with Avowed. However, he reaffirmed Obsidian's commitment to delivering high-quality games, stating, "We will get there with all these games. Are they going to be on the timelines we originally thought? No. But we’re going to get there." Both titles are slated for release on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
