Few things are as satisfying in an action RPG as perfectly parrying an enemy attack, turning their aggression into a swift counter. If you crave that visceral *Avowed* experience, here's how to master the art of the parry.
How to Unlock Parry in Avowed

Parrying isn't available from the start; you'll need to unlock it. Navigate to the Abilities menu, then select the Ranger tab. The Parry ability is located near the top of the middle column. To unlock it, you must first allocate an Ability point to any of the three core skill trees. Once that's done, Parry is yours.
Parry has three ranks, detailed below:
Rank | Player Level Requirement | Level Description |
1 | N/A (1 Point Spent) | Unlocks Parry. |
2 | Player Level 5 | Increases Parry efficiency by 25%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries. |
3 | Player Level 8 | Increases Parry efficiency by 50%, dealing greater Stun on successful parries. |
At level 10, you can unlock "Arrow Deflection," allowing you to parry projectiles like arrows.
How to Parry Attacks in Avowed

Parrying requires precise timing; block just as an enemy's attack connects. You'll hear a metallic clang and see a visual cue as the enemy stumbles. Mastering the timing takes practice, but it's less demanding than in games like Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
Parrying Limitations
Not all attacks are parryable. Attacks indicated by a red circle require dodging. Furthermore, only certain weapons can parry. Single-handed and two-handed weapons generally work, excluding those in your off-hand. Shields in your off-hand can also parry. Ranged weapons (guns, wands, bows) and grimoires cannot parry.
What Parrying Does (and Why You Should Use It)
Parrying stuns attackers, creating an opening for significant damage. It's a fantastic defensive and offensive tool, especially for melee builds. Ranged characters might find it less useful. However, Avowed's respec system makes it easy to adjust your build if you change your mind.
