Skateboarding Returns: Console Playtest for the Highly Anticipated "skate." Now Live
Exciting news for console gamers! The long-awaited "skate." – the newest installment in the beloved Skate franchise – is now available for playtesting on Xbox and PlayStation consoles. While PC players have been enjoying early access since mid-2022, this marks the first opportunity for Xbox and PlayStation users to experience a new Skate game in over 15 years.
The last official Skate title, Skate 3, launched in 2010. Despite a dedicated and vocal fanbase, EA seemingly shelved the franchise for an extended period. However, persistent fan support, fueled by the ever-present #Skate4 hashtag, finally led to the creation of a dedicated development team and the announcement of a new game. Last fall, "skate." was slated for early access in 2025, making this console playtest a significant step toward that release.
Via the official "skate." Twitter account, Xbox and PlayStation players can now participate in the playtest through the "skate." Insider program (registration required). A recent video featuring the development team briefly addressed fan questions, confirming the addition of more Black hairstyle options and playfully acknowledging the "Fall 2024" playtest announcement timeline.
Confirmed as a free-to-play, live-service game by EA, details about "skate." remain somewhat limited. The game is set in the fictional city of San Vansterdam, a work-in-progress inspired by San Vanelona, Port Carverton, and real-world locations. While a map leak surfaced in 2023, significant changes are likely to have been implemented since then. Fans can either join the playtest now or patiently await the broader release.
Other Skate Games to Enjoy in the Interim
While "skate." is currently scheduled for early access in 2025, delays are always a possibility. Fortunately, fans of the skateboarding genre have several other titles to keep them occupied until the official launch.
