A unique Street Fighter 6 tournament in Japan emphasizes the importance of sleep. Dubbed "Sleep Fighter," this Capcom-backed event, sponsored by SS Pharmaceuticals to promote their sleep aid Drewell, introduces a novel scoring system.
Sleep Deprivation Penalties in a Street Fighter Tournament
The Sleep Fighter tournament is a team-based competition. Three-person teams battle in best-of-three matches, accumulating points for wins and "Sleep Points" based on sleep logged the week prior. Teams must achieve a minimum of 126 hours of total sleep (six hours per player, per night). Failure to meet this threshold results in a five-point penalty for each hour short. The team with the most cumulative sleep time gains the advantage of choosing match conditions.
This initiative, under the campaign banner "Let's Do the Challenge, Let's Sleep First," highlights the link between adequate rest and peak performance. The Sleep Fighter tournament is reportedly the first esports event to penalize insufficient sleep.
The tournament takes place on August 31st at Ryogoku KFC Hall in Tokyo. Limited in-person attendance (100 people via lottery) will be complemented by a live stream on YouTube and Twitch. Further broadcast details are forthcoming via the official website and Twitter (X) account.
Top Players Compete for Glory (and Sleep)
The event features a roster of prominent professional players and streamers, including two-time EVO champion Itazan and top Street Fighter player Dogura, promising a thrilling display of skill and strategic gameplay. This blend of competitive gaming and sleep wellness creates a truly unique esports experience.
